1844 United States presidential election

Presidential elections were held in the United States from November 1 to December 4, 1844. Democratic nominee James K. Polk narrowly defeated Whig nominee Henry Clay in a close contest turning on the controversial issues of slavery and the annexation of the Republic of Texas.
