Japanese poetry emerges, and the first imperial poetry anthologies are compiled 759 Japanese general Otomo no Yakamochi compiles the first Japanese poetry anthology, Man'yōshū, containing some 500 poems by Japanese poets who include the emperor, nobleman and commoners.
