Andrew Johnson and slavery

Andrew Johnson, who became the 17th U.S. president following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, was one of the last presidents to personally own slaves. Johnson also oversaw the first years of the Reconstruction era as the head of the executive branch of the U.S. government.
