The earliest Indo-Aryan migration to Assam is estimated to have occurred between the 2nd century BCE and 1st century CE—not earlier than 500 BCE. A 2026 genetic study on Assamese people published in the American Journal of Human Biology finds that major admixture events between Indo-Aryan speakers and populations of East and Southeast Asian ancestry occurred between 55 and 61 generations ago, roughly dating the mixture to the 2nd to 4th centuries CE (c. 196–376 AD).
