Ashfield Shale is a shale formation that is part of the Wianamatta Group of sedimentary rocks in the Sydney Basin, and it lies directly on contemporaneously eroded Hawkesbury sandstone or the Mittagong formation. These rocks were formed in the Triassic Period.
