In psychoanalysis, the concept of autism is closely linked to the term autoeroticism, which was adopted by Sigmund Freud from the physician and sexologist Havelock Ellis. While Freud developed the concept of "autoeroticism" within the framework of psychoanalysis, the sexual connotations of the term were rejected by psychiatrist Eugen Bleuler, who coined the term "autism" through abbreviation and contraction.
