William Richard Shorten (born 12 May 1967) is an Australian former politician and trade unionist who served as the leader of the Opposition and the leader of the Labor Party from 2013 to 2019, and served as a cabinet minister in the Gillard, Rudd and Albanese governments. Born in Melbourne, Shorten studied law at Monash University.
