A buitenplaats (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈbœytə(m)ˌplaːts], lit. 'outside place') was a summer residence for rich townspeople in the Netherlands. During the Dutch Golden Age of the 17th century, many traders and city administrators in Dutch towns became very wealthy.
