"Candidatus Carsonella ruddii" is an obligate endosymbiotic Gammaproteobacterium with one of the smallest genomes of any characterised bacteria. This is the first, and as of February 2022 the only species described from the genus Candidatus Carsonella, named after Rachel Carson.
