Chanbara (チャンバラ; [tɕambaɾa]), also commonly spelled chambara, meaning "sword fighting" films, denotes the Japanese film genre known as samurai cinema in English and is roughly equivalent to Western and swashbuckler films. Chanbara is a sub-category of jidaigeki, which equates to period drama.
