Counties of Scotland

The counties or shires of Scotland (Scottish Gaelic: Siorrachdan na h-Alba) were historic subdivisions of Scotland. The shires were originally established in the Middle Ages for judicial purposes, being territories over which a sheriff had jurisdiction.
