The dikaryon (karyogamy) is a cell nucleus feature that is unique to certain fungi. (The green alga Derbesia had been long considered an exception, until the heterokaryotic hypothesis was challenged by later studies.) Compatible cell-types can fuse cytoplasms (plasmogamy).
