Drop and insert

In a multichannel transmission system, drop and insert is a process that diverts (drop) a portion of the multiplexed aggregate signal at an intermediate point, and introduces (insert) a different signal for subsequent transmission in the same position. Drop and insert is practiced, for example, in time-division multiplexing (TDM) when a time slot or frequency band is replaced from another source.
