Ember days (quarter tense in Ireland), also known as Embertide, are quarterly periods of prayer and fasting in the liturgical calendar of Western Christian churches. The term comes from Old English: ymbren, possibly derived from Latin: quatuor tempora, lit. 'the four times'.
