Examples of totalitarian regimes

Within the academic context, the concept of totalitarianism has been applied to several regimes, with much debate and disagreements, most notably about the Soviet Union, Fascist Italy, Nazi Germany, the Empire of Japan under Kokkashugi, Francoist Spain, and Ba'athist Iraq. Totalitarianism represents an extreme version of authoritarianism.
