Gene redundancy

Gene or genetic redundancy is a term used to describe the existence of multiple genes in the genome of an organism that perform the same biochemical function. In these cases, mutations in one of the genes will sometimes have a smaller impact on the fitness of the organism than might otherwise be expected.
