Interposition

Interposition is a constitutional doctrine articulated by James Madison in the Virginia Resolution of 1798. It asserts the right of a U.S. state to interpose once the federal government assumes powers undelegated by the United States Constitution in a manner that is "deliberate, palpable, and dangerous exercise" of other powers.
