A kautuka is a red-yellow coloured ritual protection thread, sometimes with knots, found on the Indian subcontinent. It is sometimes called a kalava, mauli, mauli, rakshasutra, pratisara (in North India), kaapu, kayiru, charandu or rakshadhara (in South India).
