Löwenstein–Jensen medium, more commonly known as LJ medium, is a growth medium specially used for culture of Mycobacterium species, notably Mycobacterium tuberculosis. When grown on LJ medium, M. tuberculosis appears as brown, granular colonies (sometimes called "buff, rough and tough").
