LGBTQ history in the United States

The history of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) people in the United States spans from pre-colonial times to the present and includes the LGBTQ social movements they have built. Until the 20th century, it was uncommon for LGBTQ individuals to live open lives due to persecution and social ostracism.
