LGBTQ themes in anime and manga

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) themes have featured in anime and manga since at least the 1950s, when Osamu Tezuka's manga Princess Knight began serialization. Outside Japan, anime generally refers to a specific Japanese-style of animation, but the word anime is used by the Japanese themselves to broadly describe all forms of animated media there.
