The Chhatrapati was the absolute monarch of the Maratha Empire, from the late 17th century to the early 19th century, on the Indian subcontinent, mainly corresponding to the modern countries of India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. Starting in 1720s, the Peshwas were instrumental in expanding the Maratha Empire to cover large areas of the Indian subcontinent.
