List of United States Navy vice admirals on active duty before 1960

The grade of vice admiral (or three-star admiral) is ordinarily the second-highest in the peacetime United States Navy, ranking above rear admiral and below admiral. The grade of vice admiral was originally created to honor particularly successful Union Navy flag officers of the American Civil War.
