Metropolitan areas were recognized by the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) until 2010 and were separated into 5 metropolitan areas and 2 satellite cities. They were: Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Taichung, Chiayi, Tainan, and Kaoshiung.
