The Macau incident of 1601 occurred when the first Dutch ships reached the Chinese coast during the Age of Discovery. The Dutch squadron, led by Jacob Corneliszoon van Neck, approached the waters of Portuguese Macau on 27 September 1601, but were met with hostility by its residents, who captured the Dutch reconnaissance parties and summarily executed 17 of the crew.
