Sri Lanka (Sinhala: ශ්රී ලංකා, romanized: Śrī Lankā; Tamil: இலங்கை, romanized: Ilaṅkai), officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, is an island country in the northern Indian Ocean which has been known under various names over time. In the 19th century, it was said that the oldest recorded name of Sri Lanka was Tamraparni.
