Pleonasm (; from Ancient Greek πλεονασμός pleonasmós, from πλέον pléon 'to be in excess') is redundancy in linguistic expression, such as "black darkness", "burning fire", or "the man he said". It is a manifestation of tautology by traditional rhetorical criteria.
