The Socialist Republic of Croatia, one of the constituent countries of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia had gone through a number of phases in its political life, during which its major political characteristics changed - its name, its top level leadership and ultimately its political organization. During this time the main officers of state were the head of state, which was often a nominal role only, the head of government, and the head of the ruling political party, the Croatian Communist Party, a branch of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia, both of which had also changed names during this period.
