Poor person

A poor person or indigent person is a legal status that some jurisdictions recognize, so as to grant a person access to court even if they lack the financial resources to pay otherwise required fees and costs. If a judge believes that the accused person is without the financial resources to pay the costs of a court action or proceeding, the person may be granted in forma pauperis (IFP) status.
