Presidency of Martin Van Buren

Martin Van Buren's tenure as the eighth president of the United States began on March 4, 1837, and ended on March 4, 1841. Van Buren, a Democrat and vice president under Andrew Jackson, took office after defeating multiple Whig Party candidates in the 1836 presidential election.
