Smelling salts, also known as ammonia inhalants, spirit of hartshorn, or sal volatile, are chemical compounds used as stimulants to restore consciousness after fainting. The usual active compound is ammonium carbonate—a colorless-to-white, crystalline solid ((NH4)2CO3).
