Smoking in the United States military
The history of smoking in the United States military dates to the Revolutionary War, but smoking's systemic association with the armed forces started in World War I, when tobacco companies began directly distributing cigarettes to servicemen, and the eventual inclusion of cigarettes into rations. High smoking rates amongst military personnel has persisted to the present day, even as rates have declined among civilians.
