Taxation in South Africa is a well-established and robust system, and generally involves payments to a minimum of two different levels of government; the national government through the South African Revenue Service (SARS), and local government by means of measures such as rates. Prior to 2001 the South African tax system was "source-based", where in income is taxed in the country where it originates.
