Tennis was first played in the United States in the 1870s. Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, many American tennis players, such as Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Andre Agassi, and Pete Sampras have achieved international success.
