Timeline of Class I railroads (1977–present)

The following is a brief history of the North American rail system, mainly through major changes to Class I railroads, the largest class by operating revenue. 1977 The Virginia and Maryland Railroad replaces Conrail on most of the old New York, Philadelphia and Norfolk Railroad.
