The Canterbury earthquakes in New Zealand started with a moment magnitude 7.1 earthquake on 4 September 2010 at 4:35 am with an epicentre near Darfield. It caused widespread damage and was followed by several aftershocks, including a magnitude magnitude 4.7 earthquake on Boxing Day 2010, and a magnitude 6.2 earthquake on 22 February 2011.
