A prokaryote (; less commonly spelled procaryote) is a microorganism whose usually single cell lacks a nucleus or other membrane-bound organelles. The word prokaryote comes from the Ancient Greek πρό (pró), meaning "before", and κάρυον (káruon), meaning "nut" or "kernel".
