Shtetl

Shtetl or shtetel (English: SHTET-əl; Yiddish: שטעטל, romanized: shtetl, pronounced [ʃtɛtl̩]; pl. שטעטעלעך shtetelekh) is a Yiddish term for small towns with substantial Ashkenazi Jewish populations which existed in Eastern Europe before the Holocaust.
