ランドスケープは、もとの英単語の基本的な意味は、イギリスの辞書Cambridge Dictionaryによると、名詞としては「土地のひろがり、特にその外観」（a large area of land, especially in relation to its appearance）であり、動詞としては、庭園や公園やそれ以外の土地に別の特徴や植物などを加えることで一層魅力的にすること（to make a garden, park, or other area of land more attractive by adding different features, plants, etc.）と説明している。 アメリカの辞書Merriam-Websterでは、(A)名詞では1.内陸の自然の景観を表現した絵（a picture representing a view of natural inland scenery）、 2a.ある地域の地形の総体(the landforms of a region in the aggregate)、 2b.ある場所からひと目で見ることのできる領域（a portion of territory that can be viewed at one time from one place)、という意味があり、(B) 動詞としては、植物による覆いを変えることにより（自然のランドスケープを）改変したり装飾する（to modify or ornament (a natural landscape) by altering the plant cover）、という意味であると解説している。
